Products I'm Using During My Curly Hair Journey

As I explained in my secret to hair growth post, I have gone through a lot of trail and error in terms of what products work best with my hair after making the decision to ditch my heat tools and start my natural curly hair journey.

A year later and I can finally say that I've found products that work perfectly with my hair type and have been helping nourish my curls and maintaining its health. So if you're looking to try out some new haircare products, you definitely need to add these to your cart!

Cantu Conditioning Hair Lotion
Let me start off with the absolute game changer. This was the first ever product I used when starting my curly hair journey and one that I haven't found anything that even comes close!

This lotion is great for styling curly hair if you experience a lot of frizz as it's thick consistency holds everything in place and prevents flyaways throughout the day. A little bit goes a long way with this product when crunching it in the hair to achieve definition, however if you have quite tight curls which causes a lot of length shrinkage, this lotion can also be used to help weigh the hair down and achieve looser, longer curls by applying it in a downwards motion, which is the look I go for.

Cantu Comeback Curl Revitalizer
Another Cantu favourite of mine, this curl revitalizer is great for applying to your hair at the start of the styling process. The product is a spray that adds moisture to the hair which re-activates your curls after they've been slept on giving them the same volume they would have after they've been washed.

The spray has similarities to the conditioning hair lotion with the fact that it has quite a sticky consistency which helps hold the hair in place and makes it easier to style. However, I've found that when I use these products, I tend to need to wash my hair more frequently than normal as they can make my hair feel crunchy after a few applications.

John Freida Miraculous Recovery Creme Serum
Applying an oil to your hair is key to helping your hair remain strong and prevent breakage. However, my hair is very particular when it comes to oils as I've found that some can have the opposite effect and leave my hair feeling crunchy and dry while others don't absorb well into my hair, leaving it to look too oily. Since I'm yet to find the perfect oil, (any recommendations would be fab), instead I use a hair serum which targets dry, heat-damaged and frizzy hair.

This serum from John Freida is amazing for leaving my hair smooth, shiny and overall more manageable. I apply it to my hair every time after I have washed it and also every night before I go to sleep with my hair in a protective style. If you want a post on hairstyles I wear to protect my curls at night then definitely let me know and I'll be happy to do a post on it.

Creme Of Nature Leave In Conditioner
This leave in conditioning spray is extremely gentle on the hair and is great to use throughout the day to give your curls a little pick-me-up if they begin looking a bit lifeless. I prefer to use this product throughout the day and not in the morning when styling as it's main purpose is to condition rather than for styling purposes and in the morning my hair is usually well hydrated from the John Freida serum I apply the night before.

Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie
This makes your hair smell absolutely amazing. The end.

I've tried quite a few products from Shea Moisture, but this is one that I have been purchasing repeatedly. This coconut and hibiscus curl enhancing smoothie is quite similar to the Cantu Curl Revitilizer cream in a sense that is helps with the styling of your hair and keeping your curls in place throughout the day, however this product is much more rich and hydrating for the hair. Because of their similarities, I like to switch between these two products on alternate days so my hair doesn't get too used to the same products being applied day after day.

I've actually began an Instagram page dedicated to my curly hair journey, so if you're interested in knowing more  about the products and techniques I use, make sure to go and follow me @thecurlysecret.
