Who else's wardrobe is over spilling with clothes that they haven't worn in about 5 years?
Okay good, not just me then.
Decluttering the wardrobe is a task that everyone knows they need to do but it never gets done because (A) coming face to face with a mountain of clothes can be a bit daunting, and (B) we secretly don't want to get rid of anything. But once finished, clearing out your wardrobe can be such a satisfying achievement and allows you to create space for even more new clothes!
To make the process be a little easier, I have come up with some simple steps that will make clearing out any wardrobe a breeze. So put on some comfy clothes, put on your favourite music and let's get to work!
Empty Out EVERYTHING
This is the easy part. Begin by taking out every single item from your wardrobe, leaving it completely empty. I'm talking clothes, bags, shoes, accessories, the lot! Put it all into a pile on your bed so you can easily sort through it.
Separate Everything Into Piles
This is the time to get strict with yourself. Create three different piles for:
- Clothes you definitely want to keep,
- Clothes you're not sure if you want to keep or not,
- Clothes which can be donated to charity,
- Clothes which need to be thrown away.
Reorganise Your "Yes" Pile
The best advice on re-organising your wardrobe is to organise everything in an order which will make it easier for you to put together outfits everyday. The main ways of organising your clothes are by item (tops, skirts, trousers, jumpers), by colour or by occasion (summer outfits, night-out outfits, etc). I prefer to organise them by item so that everything is together and it also helps create symmetry in the wardrobe's appearance. We're all about those aesthetically pleasing wardrobes.
Revisit Your "Not Sure" Pile
Sometimes it can be hard parting with certain items of clothing because they might hold a special meaning or they just might be a piece which you once used to wear time-and-time again so you can't bare to throw it away.
When going through your "not sure" pile, ask yourself these questions to help you decide if you should to keep them or not:
- Have you worn the item in the past 3 months?
- What could you pair this item with if you were to wear it?
- Where would you wear this item to?
- Does it even still fit you?
Once you've decided what you want to keep, add them to the organised piles you created earlier.
Place Everything Back Into Your Wardrobe On Identical Hangers
You're nearly there! Now it's time to hang everything back up. To create a fully organised, clean wardrobe, make sure that all of your hangers are identical (or as identical as they can be). This is where Amazon Prime becomes your best friend. If you know that you are going to reorganise your wardrobe, you can order the hangers on Amazon and they will arrive in time the next day. Make sure you don't leave realising you need new hangers until you've taken everything out of your wardrobe because you don't wan't to get into a mini-meltdown. We've all been there.
And voila, you have a brand new, organised wardrobe!
Now time to go and shop for some new pieces!

DeleteThese are such great tips! I had a wardrobe declutter not too long ago but I definitely try to stick to the rules of what can be taken to charity, what needs to be thrown out, what might be worn this year and if it doesn't, then it's definitely got to go the next time round haha. Great post xx

DeleteI've realised that during a spring clean I really have to be quite brutal otherwise I'm just not decisive enough and keep everything! The "have you worn it in the passed year" is really the question I have to ask myself, I'm like, Caroline you haven't worn this in 2 years running, you don't need to keep it! xx
